CRAB FEST 2009

What a week it was ! I felt like I had been on an emotional roller coaster all week and then fell from the top of a Ferris Wheel upon hearing of McNair's death on Saturday. A month of NO rain and two weeks of above 100 degree temps, I needed to get away. Sunday, we drove down to Bay St. Louis on the Mississippi Gulf Coast( 75 miles) for Crab Fest 2009. A partly cloudy day of 97 degrees, hey, cool compared to 105 the day before. Crab Fest is an annual festival held each year on the 4th of July weekend sponsored by Our Lady of The Gulf Catholic Church.

The Crab Shack is where seafood of all kinds can be purchased..................
I had a bowl of Gumbo, Hubby ate a Soft Shell Crab Po Boy

But first.....I want to talk about Monday morning! Is that a rain cloud ??

YES INDEED ! It's raining at Swiftwater Farm!

That is me, in the rain, thanking God for an answered prayer for this much needed rain!
It was cool all day, a high of 75 , we got 1 inch of rain, I kept the windows and doors open with the ceiling fans on and gave the AC unit a needed break!

Our Lady of The Gulf Church sits on the Bay of St. Louis/ Gulf of Mexico

Surrounded by 300 year old live oak trees.....

Heavily damaged in hurricane Katrina, it has been totally restored

This statue withstood the forces of Katrina......

Just looking at the water, made me feel cooler

It is a very serene and beautiful setting

I took these as we left

People with boats enjoying the water

I thought this tree was so magnificent despite having endured three centuries of hurricanes

A huge crowd turned out despite the heat to enjoy the fest

Held under the many oaks

Children enjoyed the many rides

There were a number of booths of crafters selling their goods

It was so hot, I didn't look as much as I wanted

I did alot of people watching

The live band was really awesome! Playing mostly 60s music which took us back!
It was all I could do to sit still, others couldn't and danced away!

Hubby said I should do the slide! NOT!

These ceramic animals were really eye catchers............

I was tempted by the Ferris Wheel thinking it might be cool up high, but stayed strong with common sense!

These dishes were really pretty

I tried my best to get Hubby on this, he was not about to get on it!

I thought the birdhouses were great

I did come close to getting one of these, didn't know where I'd hang it though, so I passed

Crab do rule!

There are a couple of things I regret not buying and this is one...

Here's the other......

Hubby checks outs the knives on display

I checked out this cute apron

But purchased this which was more my style! I'll wear this in the garden...

Now to the "big boys" Hoss and Duke! They opened their eyes yesterday!

They need to be on a diet, I'm not kidding!

Jake has always like to sleep flat of his back, so do these big boys! Hoss is a doublewide!

So is Duke!

Loved to spend the day with you, a thunderstorm, a heat wave, a celebration with crab and lots to look and buy. What's for dessert?

I love taking trips without leaving the house. I love oak trees, love, love, love oak trees. Glad you got that much needed rain. Crab and shopping and water = a great time.

You just make me smile, Carol! Love your photos, your "zest" for life - you are truly one of a kind....*smiling at you*

Oh, that goodreads thing? I'm having trouble logging in -trying to figure out what the problem is!

Oh Carol, Glad you finally got some rain and cooler temps. Hope you bottled those 75 degree temps --to use later when it gets darn hot again.

Glad you went to the Crab Festival. Looks like--despite the heat--a good time was had by all. I love your new garden hat.

Glad your babies are doing fine!!!
Hugs,
Betsy

Oh, you got some rain, Carol. How thankful you must have been. We had some showers as well, but need more. However the last several days have been blissfully cooler. But the heat is just around the corner again.

Love the great pictures. That Crab Fest must have been so much fun! And the puppies are really growing and so cute! And I have a garden hat similiar to yours. My daughter gave it to me as one of my mother's Day gifts.

Your enthusiams is catchy, dear Carol. I think I'll go and water the garden now, and appreciate the beauty surrounding me.

Love and hugs,

Renie

What a great day. I felt like I was there too...but I didn't get a taste of that crab!!!

The tree photo was wonderful. I often ponder great trees.

And fat puppies...there are no words to describe the yumminess...

What a great post...packed with interesting things and photographs. I loved the painting of the house in the bayou. Reminds me of Marjorie Rawlings. Hope you get a good soaking soon.

wow, I don't know where to start. So glad you got the rain. That sounded like a great festival. It had a little bit of everything. I love big old trees, too, and hats like yours. I might get brave enough to wear mine out in the garden sometime. I'd probably get a few second looks. Those puppies are adorable and pleasantly plump. They look like my dachshund did when she laid on her back.

I am so pleased you had a nice day after the emotional turmoil. I don't think I have ever eaten crab!

ooh thanks I needed that trip to the ocean, cool and calm.
What a great festival, good food, shopping..oh how I love those birdhouses.
The puppies are BIG !
What on earth is moma feeding them on, other than her milk ? I can't remember the last time I saw puppies so healthy.
We've had rain here for three different days now, it's made a world of difference. The forecast is HOT again this week, and we are suppose to landscape, not sure if it's a good idea ?

Looks like the perfect getaway! We're suffering through triple-digit temps here in Texas, too. Meanwhile, those little ones are precious!

Well, I said to myself,
be brave, scroll down and read.
I was mentally prepared to not suffer when reading about some Blue Crab bake or the like. Oh, my pour little soul, prepared for everything, but: Soft Shell Crab Po Boy! Where is your nearest airport, pleeease?

Merisi said...

Alright, I am over it ( the Soft Shell Crab Po Boy!), I shall stay put. ;-)

The frilly lobster-jeans-apron is hilarious, the birdhouses pretty and the boys oh so sweet!

Oh brother...what different comments we have about the RAIN !
Those pups, what is sweeter than that?
As I am typing, there is a story on Fox News about McNair. a news conference. To be honest, I have absolutely NO idea who he is!!

That looks like a lot of fun. I've been hearing from my mom and my friends how hot it's been down there and the lack of rain. Makes me scared because hot weather is the fuel a hurricane needs. Beautiful pictures, Carol.

I love to eat soft shell crabs so I would have had a ball there, Carol! The crafts looked interesting too ---I liked those bird houses and the stained glass.

I'm glad that that area is recovering from Katrina and I hope that there won't be any more hurricanes as bad as that one was.

Glad you got the rain you needed ...we've been finally having some nice blue skies :-)

You should have done the slide! I went down the one at the county fair with my oldest son last weekend. There's nothing like rough indoor/outdoor carpet taking the skin off your tail bone to stop you from sliding into a metal fence at the bottom while some carnival worker guy laughs at you! Oh wait, did you mean the electric slide?? I was referring to the big yellow slide!!

Love all your pics and you could have picked up one of those birdhouses for me! I can never pass up a birdhouse (or seafood!)

Looks like you had great time and the puppies are adorable.

I am sitting here grinning like a jackass at the pictures of the puppies. SO CUTE!!! Little chubbos!

Hi Carol! I'm SOOOO glad Glynis posted a link on her blog. That's how I found you. What a wonderful post! I was just telling my husband today that I was craving some seafood. Thanks for the vicarious plate of crab :) And the puppies are adorable! I had to show the picture of their fat little bellies to everyone in the room. Thanks for the wonderful post and I look forward to visiting often.

Crab Fest looked like a lot of fun. I assume there was some crab to eat, too. I love crab cakes, a carryover from my days in Baltimore.

The babies are SOooo cute. With eyes wide open, they will soon be an adventurous duo!

Carol: just finished watching the Steve McNair memorial service from Mt. Zion church here in Nashville.
Packed to the roof, and I couldn't stop crying throughout the service.
He was a well-loved man, his peers and team -mates all spoke in his honor, and now his reamins are to be transported to Hattiesburg for burial.
What a sad loss.

Looks like you had a pretty intense week too...

The fair looks like fun but it does look hot!
The puppies are so sweet and they are a bit "round" aren't they!? It must be wonderful to have such cuties!
