A Little R & R

No, I didn't get to spend the weekend here but reading a book in this setting would have been a real weekend of R & R............. :) Instead I tried to do a little relaxing here at the farm. Hubby's son David came up from New Orleans and brought us a cooler full of huge fresh Shrimp! They de-headed them and I washed them and bagged them for the freezer.

I got this cute tissue holder in the mail. I won this on Linda's Prairie Flower Farm Blog last week! Thank you Linda, I love it!

Remember I told you I planted seed to grow these Pink Swirl Hardy Hibiscus?

So far I have 15 out of 21 coming up!

We planted this Bottle Brush Tree in March 2008. It is blooming for the first time!!

I can't wait till it is in full bloom!

On Saturday it was a cool 80 degrees with a good breeze so I sat in the Pond House watching Momma Mallard swim with the 3 baby ducks..............Click on the pics for a close up view!

I wish they would stay this small, they are so cute!

You may remember awhile back I posted on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, our resident Blue Heron. I told you how Hubby fishes for him..........Here he waits for Hubby to throw him a bream.

There it is Henry! The first of three Hubby caught for him!

He has it in his beak..........

If you look below the black stripe on his head, you can see it going down his throat!

And this fellow flew over to get in on the action. Unless he is some kind of a Goon, I don't know what he is..........

So mainly I just read, watched the chickens and pond life and took it easy over the weekend!
I hope yours was restful too!

Ohhhh, that first photo reminds me of my days on the Red Sea at Sharm El Sheikh! Just like that!

I envy you your resident Great Blue Heron. What a beauty! And your Goon is a Green Heron, I think.

How funny! Feeding a fishing bird. I've heard of our pets having us trained. Now a bird ..... Love it.

We all need R&R . I generally slow down (as if I haven't slowed down at 72, soon to be 73) Sunday particularly is reserved for church, and in the afternoon, laundry, watching football or other sports.

In blogging, I call them slider days. If I haven't written and scheduled, there is no post, but sometimes read.

Glad you had a relaxing weekend, Carol. You need that every once in awhile --after caring for all of the babies on your farm!!!!! How are the puppies and chicks today?

That shrimp sounds delicious.
Hugs,
Betsy

The ducklings are so cute. Isn't it fun watching a wild family grow up? It's one of my favorite things.

I got a good chuckle from your hubby fishing for the heron! I hope the heron remembers how to fish on his own! Does the heron stay all winter or migrate?

Herons are so elegant. Always fun to see what's going on in your neck of the world, Carol.

Okay, I have to say I'd much rather be where you are than where your book may have led you...much lovlier...to me, anyway.

Oh, WOW! I would never have imagined a Blue Heron would be so interactive - kind of like a trained seal. I just watch the herons around here in awe and count myself lucky.

What a nice son David is. A whole cooler full??
I agree with Vicki and am pretty sure that is a Green Heron, They are so small, we hesitate to think of them as Herons.
Your Great Blue is quite a trip. If I didn't catch anything, I'd be tempted to buy him some.
Glad you had such a nice R&R. They are necessary.

I love your bottle brush tree, it looks just like one. We have a resident blue heron, too, they are so regal. My tomatoes and grapes are still keeping me busy, though,

My bottle brush plants look pathetic. Drought is not good for them. I find them a most interesting plant. Aptly named.

With my garden rapidly slowing down and the weather cooling off, I spent some time sitting outside reading. It felt great!

It's so hot here in Southern California, and the fires are raging, so I stayed indoors. It is good to kick back on a weekend every once in a while.

Good deal on the hibiscus...thats not bad at all!!! It feels so good here today. The weather this past weekend in Montgomery wasn't to bad either. It rained all day yesterday on the way from Montgomery to Mobile, but that was fine...I got to take a much needed nap once I got home!

Wow, your post makes me miss my hometown. (I'm from Houma, Louisiana originally). In fact, how dare ye talk about getting shrimp. I LOVE Shrimp, any style (think Bubba Gump) but it's not cheap or always easy to find where I live now. I found you through some blog hopping on another site. I'm glad I did. Your photos are amazing. I miss seeing egrets, ponds (and swamps). You can take the girl out of Cajun country but you can't take the Cajun out of her, that's me!

Carol, sounds like you had a nice weekend. Saturday was cloudy and breezy in the mid 50's here in WI. My boys and I did some harvesting in the garden.

How cool that you have a Blue Heron hanging around.

You are blessed to live in such wonderful surroundings! Thanks for sharing your photos with us. The flowers are also very pretty. The hibiscus looks like mine and the bottlebrush is exactly like those my daughter has in Australia. They are lovely, aren't they?

I love Bottle Brush a member of the Grevilia family. They are native to Australia growing wild in the bush & come in a wide variety of blooms & sizes.I have some of the dwarf variety in the front yard, they are hardy[surviving in AZ] & bloom most of the year. They are also low maintenance, & that's a big plus in my book!
