Birthday,BBQ, Bluegrass

August 6th is Hubby's Birthday......we always try to do something fun for our birthday. We had been for weeks trying to decide what to do for his. He was watching one of his favorite TV shows, BBQ Pitmasters a couple of weeks ago and mentioned how he would LOVE to go to one of their competitions. So I got on the computer to search for one. It just so happened that there was one in Dillard, GA on his birthday! Dillard is a beautiful small town in the North GA mountains only 100 miles from our place in the Smokies so the plans were made!

There are actually 7 Pitmasters on the show.....3 of his favorites were going to be at this competition.

The star of the show is 3 time World Champion Myron Mixon of Jack's Old South in Unadilla,GA . Now Myron is a character on the show! The kind you love to hate! We often discussed if he was really such a jerk in person and I'd say; " I bet it is put on cause he makes the show". I was right, you have never met a nicer guy and we really enjoyed meeting him and talking to him! Made Hubby's Day!

Another favorite is Tuffy Stone of Cool Smoke in Richmond,Va. Hubby got some great tips from him!

Last but not least....Chris Lilly of Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur, Alabama! What a super guy he is!

There was also plenty of great mountain Bluegrass music from some really talented musicians!

You should NEVER visit Dillard without enjoying some of the best food in the South at The Dillard House! We had lunch there and it was AWESOME!

Family style dining with to go boxes!

We then returned to Townsend and spent a few rainy mountain days at our little place taking in the view! It was SO Much Cooler than the horrendous heat we have endured here in South Mississippi this summer!

I know I haven't been blogging much but hopefully I'll get back to it more often now that the garden and canning are over for awhile!

Though I've lived in the San Francisco area for 34 years, I'm originally from Columbus, Georgia and went to nursing school in New Orleans. I'm so happy that, over the years, a few decent restaurants have opened out here with good Southern cooking and decent BBQ - but not quite as good as home.

I loved your post which made me homesick and HUNGRY!

Hi Carol, I was hoping when you mentioned Dillard that you went to the Dillard House. It is wonderful --and you can take home quite a bit for another meal or two...

Glad you enjoyed our neck of the woods... Happy Birthday to your hubby.
Hugs,
Betsy

What a great time you two had! My husband loves these types of cooking shows and I might have to steal your idea around his birthday! I've been kind of on again/off again with the blogging as well!

Wow. How cool is that? I watch that show too. Chris Lilly and BBG BBQ is just up the road a piece! Your place in the Smokies is so pretty. It is a good place to spend the summers, away from the miserable heat!

Hi ,Carol! What a lovely day you and your husband had. It's funny when you write : it's only 100 miles from your place, I think : that's 160 kms, and that's a long drive.
Thank for your visit. The weather is wet and sometimes sunny, but on the whole it looks like autumn.

What a neat idea for a BBQ buff.
That table had enough food for a family of 4. Wow.
I have missed your posts and thought you had quit. I just tried to reinstall you on my blog list and it just won't take it. Will try later.
Glad you are back at it.

I love BQ but I think pork butts smoked is heavenly. A former resident here did them to perfection. I still have two in the freezer.

Glad to see you back at your computer! I hope you didn't try to can enough for half of MS this year. Glad you had a mountain respite to go to this year! The scenery does, indeed, look divine!

I think many of us are having trouble keeping up with our blogging - esp the visiting and reading - thought I so enjoy it!

I pass that place when I'm traveling sometimes and have never stopped in!

Hope you have been well, my friend.

Happy birthday to your husband and so good that he got to go to the Pit Masters! I have been wanting to go to the Cowboy cookoffs for over the past 5 years. Last year, my husband took to one for my birthday! It was wonderful. We love barbeque here in Texas and would love to go to one of the pitmaster events as well! Glad you are back to blogging! blessings,Kathleen
